Radio 1 Big Weekend

Radio 1 Big Weekend

After a successful BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Bangor, north Wales on May 22 and 23rd, attracting 40,000 people, the race is on to see who will host the 2011 event.

Why should Radio 1 bring its 2011 Big Weekend to Bournemouth?

On May 25th Bournemouth kick started their campaign bid “RADIO 1 BIG WEEKEND 2011 - BRING IT TO BOURNEMOUTH!” on Facebook and have attracted a huge following having signed up over 16,000 members. The main attraction of Bournemouth in Dorset is its sea location and great beach.

The Big Weekend grew out of the Radio 1 roadshow, which was first held at Newquay in 1973 with Bournemouth beach used as a venue in the 1980s. The popular event attracts a large following, is the first major British music festival of the year and always attracts well know UK and worldwide artists. People have to apply to the BBC for free tickets as none are available on the day itself. The event is broadcast live on BBC Three, Radio 1 and online, giving the location itself huge marketing exposure and guaranteed tourism revenue.

In a recent Dorset Echo article Jon Weaver, Bournemouth Tourism’s marketing and events manager, said: “While Bournemouth would, in principle, support the idea of having Radio 1’s big weekend at the town, it simply does not have the infrastructure to safely and legally execute an event of this size and nature.

Here at The Outdoor Store we think if the Bournemouth Council won’t allow Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Bournemouth then there is plenty of room at Weymouth. What do you think?

Festival season - what to take?

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

Festival season is now in full swine. Despite some events being sold out, V Festival tickets all disappeared in 90 minutes and Glastonbury booking is now closed, there are still plenty of venues for families, ravers and hard-core dancers.

For a list of all the major festival have a look at the Times Online’s The top 100 music festivals.

But a word to the wise. Remember to go prepared.

Stuff at the ready

I really am running the risk of sounding like a parent. But I know from experience that spending, just a little time packing will make all the difference.

Hot warm days means that the temperature drops at nights. If you are pitching up at a festival for several days then you want a decent sleeping bag. Something that will be big enough and keeping you warm and dry.

Highlander offer a large range of bags for cover most options. You won’t need a -25oC bag, unless you fancy climbing K2 later. But most bags will keep you warm down to 0oC. Prices start at £33.

Have a look at the Highlander Voyager Compact Sleeping Bag.

Sleeping comfortable – No?

Highlander compact sleep mat

Nobody like sleeping on the floor, it’s just grim. You have two options here;

1) A sleeping mat. These roll up really well and don’t add to much bulk. Check out the Highlander Compact Sleep Mat (Long) £7.99.

2) An Air bed. Much more confrtable that a mat, but it’s heavier. Highlander Backpacking Airbed is £15.99.

Hungry?

A music festival can be a long day, so after the first day of music is over you are bag at the tent and are hungry and want something to drink.

Tea’s up. The Highlander whistling kettle takes 2 litres. You will need a gas stove.

Mug’s at the ready. The Highlander Thermo Mug hold 350ml and is £4.00

Tents

The weather can be so unpredictable that one day it can be glorious sunshine and the next there can be a downpour. You want a decent tent for the festival. Not the old ridge tent your dad has been saving for you in the garage, but something that was made this centaury.

The Outdoor Store has a wide range of tents available.

Suncream

As the Buz Luhrman song goes, “Trust me on the suncream”. It’s important – most music festivals have precious little shade and believe me, you don’t want miss any acts on stage because you’ve caught sunstroke. Take something that has a reasonably high SPF, +30 should fine.

And make sure you drink plenty of water.

If you need anything else. The Outdoor store in Weymouth can a huge range of kit from Highlander, Regatta, Web-tex and Viper. Check it out

Regatta Arran Jacket Review

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

Regatta Arran 3 in 1 Waterproof Jacket

Regatta Arran 3 in 1 Waterproof Jacket

For outdoor pursuits, serious hiking or just simple dog walking, I don’t think you can’t beat the Regatta Arran 3 in 1 jacket to provide all year round protection against the elements. For me the beauty of this design is the flexible use of layers to suit the conditions.

An outer waterproof shell repels rain whilst a high-tech lightweight internal layer adds extra warmth. The 2 layers can be worn separately or in combination and I found them easy to attach and detach.

Regatta Arran Specification:-

Here’s the technical bit: The Regatta Arran Waterproof jacket is made from Isotex 10000 XPT fabric with Atl durable water repellent treatment, taped seams and water repellent zips for extra protection from the rain. The windproof fabric offers increased levels of breathability being 30% more breathable than standard Isotex fabrics.

This enhanced breathability ensures comfort by allowing evaporation of unwanted body moisture, whilst retaining high levels of protection from the worst of external elements.

Regatta Quality

Regatta have really put a lot of thought into this design and the result is a fashionable black jacket that is practical, incredibly lightweight, durable and easy to clean. Added to which the warm but superlight materials can be easily compressed and packed down, making it a great addition to any walker’s rucksack or day sack. Attention to detail in this design is superb, with the cuffs, hood and hem all adjustable to ensure a snug fit. The pockets are also easy to access, even when wearing a rucksack, and there is also a useful map pocket.

In my opinion the Regatta Arran Waterproof jacket is a high performance waterproof jacket that offers outstanding value and is a great investment.
