The seaside town of Weymouth in Dorset has a jam packed events calendar, with festivals taking place throughout the year. The annual Armed Forces Day / Veterans Awareness Week takes place between Saturday 12th and Friday
18th June 2010 and features unique, social and commemorative events.
Weymouth and Portland is an ideal location to celebrate Britain’s Armed Forces - past, present and future - and to show your support for the men and women who are part of the Armed Forces community both veterans and current serving troops.
Beach Assault and Bridge Building Demonstration 12th June
There are events scheduled throughout the day between 9.00 and 17:00 with a Beach Assault and Bridge Building by Royal Engineers at 12 noon. The assault is expected to consist of Landing Craft, inflatable boats, armed divers and an assault team creating a thrilling and realistic attack on an enemy beach.
Early afternoon there will be an opportunity to wave your flag as the Historic Military Vehicle Convoy departs from Weymouth Seafront with marching bands and parade through the Borough to Portland and further on to Castletown, Portland. There will also be demonstrations and static displays to add to the nostalgic experience.
Open Air Church Service and Parade 13th June
On Sunday 13th there is an Open Air Church Service of Remembrance at 11 am on Weymouth Esplanade and a parade lead by Cadet 150.
Veterans Rendezvous
The Veterans Rendezvous event takes place in the Ocean Room within the Weymouth Pavilion on Saturday 12th June, Monday 14th, Wednesday 16th and Friday 18th from 10am to 12 noon.
It is a great opportunity for ex-service and auxiliary service veterans to meet old friends and comrades, and make new friends in a relaxed, informal location. There will be lots of information on display together with Cadet 150 photographs and details on the week’s festivities.
Saturday 12th to Friday 18th June 2010
During the week the celebrations will provide a focus on the tireless work carried out by the Veteran Associations, volunteers, charity organisations and today’s Military Forces. There will also be Ex - Service Association awareness & fund raising stalls / units together with Welfare and information units i.e. SSAFA / Veterans Agency Advice Bureau etc. (All Day on the Esplanade).
Other highlights include 1940’s Day at Portland Castle, theatre shows and the AJ Big Band Dance at the Pavilion Ocean Room.
Your support for the Armed Forces provides a much valued morale boost for the troops and their families. Why not take a moment to find out more about their work? Events take place around the country with Cardiff acting as host for the national Armed Forces Day on Saturday 26 June 2010.
In Weymouth and Portland the flags and bunting will be flying high and here at The Outdoor Store we will also be joining in the local celebrations.
